A woman sustained minor injuries after an explosion near a garbage bin outside of Central French Immersion Public School in Grimsby on Tuesday.
Niagara police responded to reports of an explosion around 1:30 p.m. near the French immersion school near Boulton Avenue.
Niagara police took to social media shortly before 2:30 p.m. saying that the school was initially placed under a “lock and learn” order.
Officials later confirmed to CHCH News the victim was a staff member at the school. The woman was later released from hospital with minor injuries.
Students were moved to a nearby location for the school’s dismissal, and people at the neighbouring daycare in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church have also been evacuated.
In an emailed statement, Niagara police said the explosives unit had been called to the scene to investigate the cause of the explosion, which remains unknown at this time.
Investigators learned that the woman had access a garbage bin outside of the building when there was an explosion. Officers say the explosion remained limited to the garbage bin area.
Police have lifted many road closures since the explosion, with a small section of Brierwood Avenue still closed as of Wednesday afternoon.
