Widespread flooding leaves parts of Hamilton, Halton Region under water

First Published:

Torrential heavy rain downpours in many parts of Hamilton and the surrounding regions have caused widespread flooding.

Throughout Monday, emergency crews scrambled to remove stuck cars and set up road closures after multiple culvert failures spilled water onto the streets throughout the area.

While the rain cleared around 4:30 p.m., much of the damage was already done — leaving many homes and businesses inundated with water.

“We’ve lived here about 16 years, and this is the first time,” Andrew Kellman, a Burlington resident, said. “The whole basement is flooded. Everything is gone.”

According to Halton Conservation, 50 mm of rain fell throughout Burlington and Oakville in a single hour — prompting the agency to issue a flood watch warning.

“Conservation Halton is asking all residents to stay away from watercourses, shorelines and structures such as bridges, culverts, dams, and break walls,” it said, adding that the high water levels, fast flooding waters, and slippery conditions along stream banks and shorelines are extremely dangerous.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the City of Burlington said all of its road closures had been lifted, except for part of Unsworth Road between Garden View and Sandcherry Drive, where crews continued to clear debris and make repairs.

In an update Tuesday, the city says a new temporary road closure is in place at Cavendish Drive and Weybridge Court due to flooding. Crews are on site to clear the area.

The Hamilton Conservation Authority has also issued a flood watch message, which is in effect until Wednesday.

It reminds residents to be careful around bodies of water, with faster moving water posing significant hazards.
