What’s open and closed around Hamilton on New Year’s Day

With the New Year holiday looming just around the corner, you might be wondering what closures are happening in Hamilton and the surrounding areas on the first day of the new year.

Regionally, the following services will be closed on New Year’s Day.

  • Municipal offices;
  • Banks;
  • Canada Post offices;
  • LCBO and Beer Stores;
  • Some malls, including CF Lime Ridge Mall, Jackson Square, Eastgate Square, and Mapleview Shopping Centre. The Outlet Collection in Niagara will be open.

Some pharmacies and restaurants will remain open. Residents are urged to check holiday schedules online before heading out.

Whether it’s garbage collection, public transit or general recreation centres, there are a myriad of public services that will be open, closed or operating in a limited capacity over the next few days.

City of Hamilton

All of Hamilton’s administrative offices will be shut down until Jan. 2

Public transit will be operating on a regular Sunday schedule on Dec. 31, with an extended late evening service for routes that operate past 10 p.m. Rides will be free after 6 p.m. 

The service will again operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1 with service ending at 10 p.m.

ATS-Darts will be operating on holiday service hours on Dec. 31. 

All subscription trips on DARTS, except for dialysis trips, are cancelled. Passengers who need to travel on either of those days must make arrangements in advance.

Additionally, the ATS Customer Service offices will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Waste collection services will not occur on Jan. 1. (Green bin, blue box, bulk waste or garbage pickup) and will be pushed ahead by one day. Regular service will continue on Jan. 2.

Hamilton’s Farmer Market will be closed from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2.

The Hamilton Public Library will close all branches from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2.

City of Hamilton Animal Services offices and shelters will be closed on Jan. 1.

Niagara Region

Public transit will be running on a holiday schedule.

Welland and St. Catharines will have no service on Jan. 1.

Waste collection services will not occur on Jan. 1.

Halton Region

Transit services in Burlington will offer an extended service Dec. 31 on Route 1, and late night services on Routes 1, 50, 51, and 52. Holiday schedule on Jan. 1.

Transit services in Oakville will offer late night service from the Oakville GO after 10 p.m., and free service at 7 p.m. Read more here. Service will operate on a holiday schedule on Jan. 1.

Waste collection services will not occur on Dec. 31 in Burlington or Milton.

Oakville is offering some bulk pickup services on Dec. 31.

Waste collection services will resume for the region in the new year.

Brant County

Public transit will not be operating on Jan. 1.

Waste collection services will not occur on Jan. 1 and will resume the following day.

Norfolk Country

Waste collection services in Simcoe continue as normal.

Waste collection services will not be operating in the rest of Norfolk County on Dec. Jan. 1 and will resume the following day.

Haldimand County

Waste collection services in the region will not occur on Jan. 1 and will instead be delayed by a day.
