Toronto Zoo “Gorillas on the Line” campaign wants your old electronics

First Published:

The Toronto Zoo has kicked off a campaign to save gorillas in the Congo.

As part of the “Gorillas on the Line” initiative, the zoo is hoping to collect 15,000 electronic devices.

Some elements used to make cell phones are mined in the forests in the Congo, which are home to endangered lowland gorillas.

The zoo says recycling old devices will reduce demand to mine these elements.

The zoo will sell the devices to a local recycler, who will break down the phones and sell the components.

The money the zoo gets for the devices will be donated to different conservation programs in Africa.

You can mail your old devices to:

361A Old Finch Ave.
Toronto, ON
M1B 5K7

Or hold on to them to drop off at the zoo when it reopens.

The zoo has collected 47,569 cellphones and raised $38,055 to date.
