Toronto police say an officer has been rushed to hospital after being shot in the city’s midtown area and they are searching for a suspect.

Police say it happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after officers stopped a vehicle while conducting an investigation in the Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue area.

They say an officer discharged a firearm at the scene.

Police say one person was arrested at the scene and another is still at large.

They say the province’s police watchdog is now investigating.

The shooting led to rush-hour chaos in what is a busy part of the city, with sirens blaring, a stretch of a major thoroughfare shut down and traffic gridlock.

There was no immediate word on the extent of the officer’s injuries.
