Tilting at wind turbines

First Published:

There was a packed crowd in Fisherville Tuesday night as people from across Haldimand County fought proposals for three wind farms along the north shore of Lake Erie.

Samsung, Next-Era, and Capital Power want to build large scale wind turbine developments between Dunnville and Nanticoke.

The province has been pushing wind-power under the Green Energy Act, saying it’s a safe, environmentally friendly source of renewable energy for the future.
Groups like WindConcerns Ontario claim the turbines harm human health, and drive power prices up while driving property values down.

Last week, the Ontario government decided to stop “off shore” wind development in the great lakes.
Premier Dalton McGuinty had said standards need to be developed with the U.S. first. However the three proposals in Haldimand are for on-shore development.
