A St. Catharines teen made headlines after joining country star Zack Bryan on stage at the Scotiabank Arena on Monday in a moment that gained almost 11 million views.

17-year-old Lucas Mason took centre stage and belted out “Heading South”, one of Bryan’s most popular hits, after the country star invited him up.

He had to get creative to make it up there. Initially, he wrote a sign asking “can I play Heading South?” but after security confiscated it, he wrote the same request on his t-shirt.

With a little help from other fans, he got his time with the star and the rest is history.

“I just talked to everybody and I said hey I’m going up with Zack Bryan I’m hoping to try and get up with him can you guys help me out. Can you guys grab his attention? I promise I’m not a bad singer. I promise I’m not bad with guitar.” said Lucas.

“It was pretty nerve wracking. He is one of my biggest inspirations.”

Mason says despite not spending more time with Zack Bryan backstage, he walked away with the country singer’s guitar, which was used in the performance.

“He just said, ‘Here you go, great job it’s yours’ and he took off his guitar and he gave it to me and he said it’s yours and I’m like really? Like thank you. Are you serious? And he said yeah so I shook his hand cause I knew I had to shake his hand.”

His older brother Ethan says he thought his friends were playing a prank on him.

“We didn’t even think it was real at first cuz we just thought they might just be playing a joke on us but then I got a text from my other friend and he said ‘dude why is your brother on stage.’” said Ethan.

Lucas says his mom, who is a music teacher, got him into music at a young age.

He says he’s currently working on releasing new music soon and is even considering a big move to Nashville.
