Suspects sought after fire causes $8 million in damage to Brampton school

First Published:

Peel police are asking for the public’s help in identifying those responsible for setting a fire that caused $8 million in damage to a Brampton school.

Emergency crews were called to St. Leonard Elementary School on Saturday after receiving reports of black smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a fire in the office area of the school.

Police say no injuries were reported but they believe the fire was intentionally set.

Investigators say the suspects caused significant damage to classrooms, electrical systems and other important areas of the school before igniting a fire in the office.

“Our school is a source of much pride to St. Leonard students and staff, past and present. We are shocked to learn of the extent of the damage and that the fire may have been deliberately set,” said Principal Celiza Ribeiro, St. Leonard Elementary. “We appeal to the community to come forward with any information that they think may help police in their investigation.”

Police say it will take roughly 12 to 18 months to repair the damage.

Detectives are asking for nearby residents and anyone who travelled in the area between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday to check dash-cam and video surveillance footage for suspicious activity.

Anyone with information is asked to please contact 22 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-453-3311, ext. 2233.
