Hamilton man in critical condition after apartment fire

First Published:

A Hamilton man is in critical condition after a multiple-alarm fire in an apartment building on Sunday.

The blaze broke out shortly after 9 a.m. on the ground floor at 70 Jerome Cres., just east of Centennial Parkway.

Fire officials responded to reports of heavy smoke conditions in the first floor hallway. The fire was quickly upgraded to a multiple alarm, bringing additional resources from across the City to the scene.

Jim Kettles with the Office of the Fire Marshal says they found one person without vital signs and “with assistance of EMS personnel they were able to restore a pulse and they transported the person to Hamilton general where they’re currently in critical condition.”

“The fire itself was pretty much contained to the one unit, very minimal, minimal smoke spread. None of the other units within the building were affected.”

Residents have been allowed back in the building and no other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the investigation is still underway. Damages to the apartment and areas affected by smoke in the building is estimated to be $400,000.
