No more steel making at U.S. Steel Hamilton

Today U.S. Steel Canada officially shuts down its steel and iron-making operations in Hamilton.
The decision to close the facilities was announced in October. 47 non-union jobs will be lost.
The Hamilton Works plant was idled in late 2010, with the majority of workers reassigned to other parts of the company’s operations. There are still more than 800 employees at the complex, which also includes coke and finishing operations.
U.S. Steel acquired the integrated steelmaking operations when it bought Stelco in 2007.
Hamilton’s steel committee was revived this year after a three-year hiatus to discuss the future of jobs, pensions and the land.
