A Royal Canadian Legion in St. George is presenting a cheque for more than $35,000 to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada on Thursday evening following a successful fundraiser in May.

The event that took place on May 5 at the Gaukel Memorial Community Centre saw nearly 600 people come out to raise money for research into Glioblastoma, which is an aggressive and fast-growing brain tumour.

Event organizers Leslie Hendrickson and Fiona Bell say the St. George Legion will present the cheque signed for $35,185.07 on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Hendrickson and Bell pitched the idea to host the fundraiser to the Legion after meeting someone whose husband lives with Glioblastoma.

The event also honoured The Tragically Hip lead singer Gord Downie, who died in October 2017 following a battle with brain cancer.

It featured Grace 2, a Tragically Hip cover band, as well as multiple Tragically Hip-themed raffle and silent auction prizes.
