St. Catharines landlord charged for building code violations

A landlord in St. Catharines is facing a $25 thousand fine and two years probation for violations of the Ontario Building Code and Fire Code at two rental properties.

An investigation into the properties revealed violations, including missing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, among other infractions.

One of the buildings is located at 412 to 414 St. Paul St. where the landlord was charged with failing to comply with an order and received a fine of $7,500.

The second building is located at 31 Page St. where the landlord was fined $10,000 for failing to install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

An additional $7,500 fine was received for one count of failing to comply with an order under the Fire Prevention and Protection Act.

The City of St. Catharines is reminding landlords and tenants that the Ontario Fire Code requires working smoke alarms on every level of a home and functional carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas.
