South Africa accuses Israel of genocide against Palestinians at UN court

First Published:

South Africa is asking the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) to order Israel to halt its attacks on Gaza. It’s accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians.

The Israeli government has issued a statement saying it’s rejecting South Africa’s genocide accusations. A foreign ministry statement says the case lacks a legal foundation and constitutes a “vile exploitation and cheapening” of the court. South Africa is asking the UN’s top court to issue an interim order for Israel to immediately suspend its military operations. Meanwhile, more Palestinians were killed on Friday as Israel widens its campaign.

Thousands of civilians were seen surrounding a relief aid convoy in northern Gaza, as they get more and more desperate. People arrived in Rafah in trucks, carts and on foot. Those who haven’t found space in the already overwhelmed shelters have built tents on the roadsides.

The United Nations says tens of thousands of Palestinians streamed into the already crowded town at the southernmost end of Gaza in recent days. They are fleeing Israel’s bombardment of the center of the strip.

Israel launched more air and ground strikes on the Palestinian territory today, according to Gaza health authorities 187 more Palestinians were killed by the Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours.

Israel launched new assaults in central and southern Gaza, and the country’s defence minister said it’s an essential stage in its mission to destroy Hamas.

Israel completed a series of extensive strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon and in Yemen thousands gathered at a rally in the capital to show their support for Palestinians in Gaza as well as Houthi’s attack against the ships in the Red Sea.

The war between Israel and Hamas has killed over 21,000 Palestinians according to the Gaza health authorities. The UN says the humanitarian crisis has left a quarter of Gaza’s population starving.
