Some Niagara residents still without power after winter storm

Residents in the Niagara Region are still reeling from a record breaking winter storm, with some still without power.

Niagara Region declared a state of emergency on Dec. 24, saying dangerous weather conditions were persiting in most of the region, causing blowing snow and white-out conditions.

Many residents were also facing a power outage as a result of the extreme weather.

Canadian Niagara Power Incorporated (CNPI) said they started the day on Christmas Eve. with 14,000 customers without power.

As of 4 p.m. on Dec. 25, CNPI reported a total of 9,600 customers without power. Updates on their Twitter show that number has improved since that time with power restored to 1,300 more customers as of 10:50 p.m.

Fort Erie and Port Colborne received the most significant damage with warming centres opening up in those areas.

The Vale Health and Wellness Centre in Port Colborne is now open to residents who need to warm up, charge their devices, and get something to eat.

The Red Cross in coordination with the City of Fort Erie has also set up a warming centre for residents to access warmth, food and water at Fort Erie Leisureplex Banquet Hall located at 3 Municipal Centre Dr.
