SIU investigates deadly shooting near Port Dover involving 70-year-old man, police

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a deadly shooting in Norfolk County involving Toronto police.
It happened on Port Ryerse Rd., in the area of Highway 6 and Highway 24, just outside of Port Dover.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says Toronto police officers were executing a search warrant at a home around noon on Wednesday when shots were fired.
The SIU says a 70-year-old man was pronounced dead. Friends have identified the man as Rodger Kotanko from Simcoe.
Toronto police tweeted that an officer had “discharged their firearm” while police were executing a firearms search warrant at the home.
Police said one person was struck and transported to hospital.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
