A statue of Sir John A. Macdonald at Gore Park in Hamilton has been vandalized.

Hamilton Police confirm they have been called about the incident and an officer was sent to the area Monday morning.

The statue was covered in red paint and the words “land back” were spray-painted next to it.

They say they believe this happened between 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Monday morning and that “a handful of people were involved.”

The legacy of Canada’s first prime minister has been the subject of controversy over the past few years due in part to his role in the creation of the residential school system.
