Single-vehicle collision leads to arrest in Welland

Niagara police have arrested a Welland man following a single-vehicle collision with possible injuries Friday.

Officers responded to the vehicle collision near South Pelham and Foss roads. Upon arrival, police found a white 2022 Hyundai Sonata off the roadway into the adjacent tree line.

Police say they briefly spoke with the driver who then suddenly ran from the scene into a wooded area. The driver swam through a nearby pond and ran into a residential neighbourhood to evade police.

A police dog helped to conduct a track. Police say the driver was found shortly after 9 a.m. hiding in a backyard on South Pelham Road.

Mohamud Mohamud Hassan, 32, of Welland has been arrested and charged with:

  • Impaired operation of a conveyance – drug;
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand – drug;
  • Flight from peace officer and;
  • Fail to stop at the scene of the accident.

Hassan was later released with a future court date.
