Sicario is a drug war drama directed by Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Prisoners). Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this summer and screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film stars Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Victor Garber, and Jon Bernthal.
In Mexico, SICARIO means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent [Emily Blunt] is enlisted by an elite government task force official [Josh Brolin] to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive. SICARIO explores the journey of an intelligence operation that pushes the rules to engage with those who don’t play by any.
Blunt has received acclaim for her role as Kate Mercer, a FBI agent in over her head. “Kate is tempted by this world,” she explains. “She realizes she was barely scratching the surface doing things by the book and now she wants to believe she can do something that will make a real difference. Yet the very idea of no longer following the rules turns Kate’s whole world upside down. Nothing makes sense anymore.”
Sicario is rated 14A.
