Safety top of mind as students prepare to return to school

First Published:

Excitement may be brewing for those getting ready to head back to school, but before you do, there are several safety tips to keep in mind.

Elementary and high school students head back to class next week, and police are asking the public to be mindful of the expected increase in vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Jeff Dhillion, a Media Relations Officer with the Halton Regional Police Service, says his department will look for what’s known as the big three: “Distracted driving, impaired operations, and speeding.”

He says officers in the region will be out in the community with an increased presence in and out of school zones.

However, it is more than just traffic that the force is asking the public to be mindful of.

“When it comes to any personal information, no matter if you are a parent or a child, you want to try and keep that off social media as there are people out there that are not of the same moral character as we are and could put it to their own use,” Dhillon says.

The department has an extensive list of good practices for cyber safety, whether for adults or youth.
