Province launches long-term care home investigative unit

The province is launching a new investigative unit that will target abuse and neglect in long-term care homes across Ontario.
The announcement was made Monday, with the government saying the new team will work to ensure “every long-term care resident lives with dignity and experiences the quality of care they deserve.”
The Ontario government has earmarked more than $72 million for the investigative team, which will be made up of 10 members.
They’ll have the authority to look into allegations of repeated and ongoing non-compliance, failing to comply with ministry inspector’s orders and other issues.
“These new investigators have the authority to add more accountability in the long-term care sector and will help address the most serious forms of non-compliance,” said Long-Term Care Minister Stan Cho.
“The new unit complements what is already the toughest inspection and enforcement program in Canada, helping give residents the safety and quality of care they need and deserve.”
