Powerful earthquake in Japan triggers tsunami advisories

A powerful earthquake that struck off of Japan’s southern coast on Thursday has triggered a tsunami advisory.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake registered a magnitude of 7.1, and was centered in waters off the coast of Japan’s southern main island, Kyushu.

The agency also said tsunami waves of up to one metre along were detected along Kyushu’s coast, as well as on nearby island Shikoku.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage done.

Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, sitting on the Pacific “ring of fire.”
