People across Hamilton were out assessing damage and cleaning floodwater, after the severe weather that slammed southern Ontario

First Published:

Firefighters were called to Dundas street across the road from the Sobeys plaza where flooding occurred.

In Hamilton indoor businesses had clean up crews on sight to deal with sewer backups that caused tremendous damage. When the cleanup crew arrived, they came into what’s called a floating floor where the water actually gets under the laminate and the panels are sitting on top of the water, two inches above the ground.

The Yogashala is closed indefinitely due to flooding. It’s part of a larger building, the type that Hamilton Councillor John Paul Danko believes should be paying more for stormwater management than a typical suburban home.

He’s introducing a motion to the city that addresses it. He says the best way for residential homes to manage stormwater is to disconnect your home’s downspouts.

A more extreme measure at home would be to build a rain garden where storm water collects and then percolates into the ground.
