Overnight shooting in St. Catharines sends 1 to hospital in serious condition

Niagara police say one man is in hospital in serious condition and another is in custody following a shooting overnight in St. Catharines.
Police say they responded around 2 a.m. to reports of gunshots fired at a home on Catherine Street near Hetherington Street.
Officers arrived to find a 19-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds who was transported by Niagara EMS to hospital in serious condition.
Investigators believe the victim left his home and was then confronted by a male suspect in a nearby alleyway.

The suspect shot the victim multiple times before running from the scene.
Police later attended a residence on Louth Street near Chetwood Street and around 4:16 a.m. the suspect exited the house and surrender to officers.
Witnesses reported seeing a car being towed away.
Taeshaun Haynes, 18, of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with the following offences:
- Aggravated assault
- Discharge firearm with intent
- Careless use of firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
- Possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition
- Possession of firearm contrary to prohibition order

Haynes was held in custody pending a bail hearing in St. Catharines.
Investigators say the accused and victim were known to one another and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
