Ontario signals support for NDP motion for free birth control

First Published:

Ontario women could soon receive free prescription contraception from the provincial government.

Marit Stiles wants OHIP to be expanded to cover these prescriptions and devices.

She says it is long overdue and would ensure that everyone who needs it has full access to reproductive planning.

“This is a truly non-partisan and common-sense way to ensure that everyone who needs it has full access to reproductive planning and choices,” said Stiles.

British Columbia has a universal contraception plan and Manitoba announced earlier this week it will do the same.

A spokesperson for Health Minister Silvia Jones told CHCH News that their government supports access to free, publicly funded contraceptives through the Ontario Drug Benefit Program and OHIP.

The NDP motion will be debated in the legislature on Nov. 29.
