Ontario judge admits to giving wrong sentence in Peter Khill manslaughter case

First Published:

An Ontario Superior Court justice admits to sentencing a man two years longer than intended in a Hamilton manslaughter case.

Justice Andrew Goodman made the confession in a letter to Ontario’s Court of Appeal dated Aug. 12.

In it, he says he meant to sentence Peter Khill to six years for the 2016 shooting of Jonathan Styres, but mistakenly sentenced him to eight years in June 2023.

Goodman says he was immediately aware of his mistake, despite taking over a year to correct it.

The shooting happened in February 2016 after Khill saw Styres trying to steal his pick-up truck at 3 a.m.

He argued it was in self-defence but that was rejected.

Khill’s lawyers argue he should be acquitted, get a new trial or that his sentence be reduced to four years — the minimum penalty for manslaughter — or six years given the revelations in Goodman’s letter.
