Ontario approves plan to clean Cootes Paradise, West Harbour

The province has approved a plan to clean up Cootes Paradise and Hamilton’s West Harbour area of Lake Ontario.
This is the second part of an order issued by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks after a sewage discharge in Chedoke Creek.
At least 24 billion litres of sewage made its way into the creek after a wastewater gate was left partially open between 2014 and 2018.
The remediation plan includes several projects to reverse the damage.
The first part of Ontario’s plan was cleaning the creek this summer.
The second part will offset the impacts associated with nutrient loading to Cootes Paradise and the Western Hamilton Harbour Area.
The budget and timelines are expected to be available in the next few months.
