One woman was killed after a fire broke out in the basement of a townhouse in Oakville over the weekend.

The fire broke out just after 6 p.m. on Saturday. Police say one man was able to escape and managed to rescue two dogs as well. He was taken to hospital for severe burns.

A woman who lived in the townhouse was killed by the fire, along with another dog.

Neighbours described seeing the flames and thick smoke, saying the flames were coming out both and front and back doors.

“Smoke was there, lots of smoke. I was really terrified,” a neighbour said.

The fire chief says there was a smoke detector on the first floor that alerted the man living there, but the basement is so badly damaged they haven’t been able to determine yet whether it had a smoke detector.

Neighbours tell us the woman who died was in her 20s. Her name hasn’t been released.

Along with the dog that died, neighbours say a cat also perished in the fire.
