One Hamilton steel mill is trying to keep its doors open, while another is closing

A day after the Liberals tabled their budget, the NDP is accusing the Wynne government of leaving the steel industry out and is calling on them to step up to keep the mill viable.
Hamilton Speciality Bar has been making steel products for over 100 years but has been in trouble since January when its doors were suddenly shut. Monday was the deadline for the company to be kept alive by a list minute bid. The mill has now been transferred to a liquidator but the union says talks are still ongoing with the potential buyer.
“I am optimistic that we have a buyer that we will be sold and up and running again.” Mickey Mercanti, President Local 4752.
Today NDP leader Andrea Horwarth accusing the Liberals of leaving the steel industry out of yesterdays budget.
“The Premier needs to step up and actually get involved.”
The Liberals saying they’re monitoring the situation, while city council has passed a motion to reach out to the province.
“We want it to continue we want it to be strong and so we are looking for any support we can get to make that happen on behalf of the employees and retirees.” Mayor Fred Esienberger.
The Sherman avenue north plant has more than 200 workers and 400 retirees
While there’s still some hope for Hamilton Speciality Bar, the doors at Republic Steel will be shut in a few weeks and production moved to a plant in Ohio impacting 45 workers and 200 retirees.
