Non-confidence vote looms as House of Commons resumes

First Published:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and opposition leader Pierre Poillievre wasted no time taking shots at one another at the resumption of Parliament on Monday.

Liberal house leader and Burlington MP Karina Gould believes the axed deal returns the minority government back to normal.

She also turned her attention to Poilievre and his comments from the day before, calling him a “fraudster and a “bully.”

“Mr. Poilievre is trying to sell a simple solution to a very complex problem,” she said. “He omits most of what the issue is, when he talks about pollution he conveniently forgets that eight out of ten Canadian’s received more than carbon rebate cheques than they pay upfront.”

Poilievre had said on Sunday that increasing the carbon price would cause a “nuclear winter,” adding that Canadian’s would struggle with bills in the colder months.

The Liberals have accused the Conservatives of dismissing experts who have described the carbon price as the least expensive and most efficient way to lower emissions.

It’s anticipated that Poilievre will bring the non-confidence motion against the Trudeau government as early as this week — but they would likely need support from both the Bloc Québécois and NDP.
