A 52 year old Niagara Regional Police officer suffered serious injuries after being shot by another officer in Pelham tonight.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit put out this statement shortly after the midday incident saying:  “The SIU can confirm it is investigating an interaction between two Niagara Regional Police Service officers, and the gunshot wound sustained by one of the officers.”

The incident happened on Roland Road in a rural area west of Thorold while both officers were on duty.   An air ambulance flew the wounded officer to Hamilton General Hospital.  Sources say he was shot multiple times.

Niagara Regional police said in a statement Thursday evening that the officer has since been upgraded to stable condition. The officer has 28 years of service and his name is not being released at this time.

In a media update SIU spokeswoman Monica Hudon said, “understanding what transpired and the relationship between the officers is part of the SIU’s investigation. I can only tell you that there was an altercation, and a firearm was discharged and one officer was struck.”

No arrests have been made at this time.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
