Niagara homicide detectives are investigating a suspicious death in Niagara Falls. The body of a man believed to be in his late 60’s was found inside his apartment at a seniors residence at 51-30 Portage Road in Niagara Falls.

Police are saying little about their investigation at this point but neighbours have identified the man who died as Joe Caputo. Caputo’s body was found in his apartment about ten Friday Morning.

Dozens of police officers converged on the retirement residence at 5130 Portage Road. Detectives, homicide officers, the K-9 unit and the forensics team.

“When they arrived on scene they found a deceased person in one of the units. The death appeared to be suspicious in nature” said Niagara Police Constable Phil Gavin.

Neighbours say the dead man is Joe Caputo. He lived in a ground floor unit at the back of the building. –

Rod Booth lives in an apartment above Caputo and he says he heard noises that woke him up very early this morning. “About two this morning I heard talking–voices–it was a female voice I’m quite sure. I know joe’s voice
because it’s very deep–I didn’t hear his voice.”

Rod says he thought about going downstairs but now is glad he didn’t.

Joe Caputo lived alone–but neighbours say he had a lot of visitors. He is well known in Niagara Falls, he used to be a soccer coach.
