New speed cameras coming to two of Hamilton’s busiest streets

Hamilton’s two automated speed enforcement cameras are coming to two of the busiest streets in the city this week. The city says this is part of its Vision Zero approach.
Two speed cameras are going to be installed in the central part of the city, along Main Street between Gage and the Delta, which is where King Street and Main Street intersect. As well as West Hamilton, on King Street between Locke and Dundurn.
Acting manager of transportation operations, Mike Field says the cameras will be installed by the end of this week, “the cameras will be operating in around either on Wednesday or Thursday… and then they’re going to stay there for a few months.”
The cameras are a form of photo radar that has been rotated throughout the city since October 2020. They measure speed and capture images of vehicles driving over the posted speed limit.
Field says the city’s goal is to improve safety along King and Main following a spike in pedestrian fatalities last year.
Hamilton police say that overall there were 24 traffic fatalities in 2022 which is a 50 per cent rise from the year before.
The city says the speed cameras are part of a bigger plan to try and make streets safe.
The Vision Zero safe systems approach includes changing parking rules, adjusting the timing of traffic signals, and putting in right turn restrictions. It’s also reducing lanes designating some for parking and transit.
The two cameras getting installed this week will stay in their locations until around June and then they’ll be moved to other areas nearby.
