A new toonie with a black outer ring has been released to honour Queen Elizabeth II’s services to Canada during her 70-year reign.

The new two-dollar coin is differentiated by its black outer ring reminiscent of a mourning armband – the coin will begin circulating later this month.

“Queen Elizabeth II served as Canada’s head of state for seven decades and for millions of Canadians, she was the only monarch they had ever known,” said Marie Lemay, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.

The coin offers Canadians a way to remember her, says Lemay.

Around five millions coins will set foot in the national coin distribution system this month and will start appearing slowly as banks restock their coin inventories.

The Mint is also hosting public coin exchanges at its Ottawa and Winnipeg boutiques today and tomorrow.
