NDP rule out coalition government with Liberals after next election

Leader of the New Democratic Party Jagmeet Singh says he is ruling out the possibility of forming a coalition government with the Liberals if a clear majority government isn’t formed after the next federal election.

Singh says the idea is off the table for his party, though the two parties continue to work closely together.

The Liberals and NDP signed a deal in March 2022 that had the NDP agreeing to support the minority Liberals on key votes in Parliament in exchange for action on NDP policy priorities.

The collaboration thus far led to the introduction of the national dental-care program, one-time rental supplements for low-income tenants, a temporary doubling of the GST rebate and legislation banning replacement workers.

The two parties had agreed to keep the agreement in place until 2025, with a federal election expected to take place by October of that year.

Singh says the New Democrats remain focused on getting through this session of Parliament and running to win the next election.
