National Steel Car workers’ month-long strike: no vacation pay, struggling wages

First Published:

National Steel Car workers have been on strike for over a month now and things don’t seem to be getting better for them as they were expecting vacation pay, but didn’t get it.

United Steelworkers Local 7135 president Frank Crowder says an additional 25 per cent is added onto their wage if they make production. But it’s not enough to keep up with the cost of living.

Crowder also says they usually get vacation pay around this time every year, but this summer they did not.

Despite that operations are closed and workers are out on the picket line, there’s a sign out on the fence that says they are hiring.

CHCH News reached out to National Steel Car but were told no one was available to comment.

The Ministry of Labour said in a statement, “a ministry mediator has been involved with the parties and remains available to assist them at the bargaining table.”

“As the ministry must act as a neutral overseer of the labour relations process in Ontario, we cannot comment on the specifics of bargaining disputes, strikes, or lock-outs.”
