Murder trial of 29-year-old Six Nations man begins Tuesday

A jury has been selected in the murder of 29-year-old Jonathan Styres from Six Nations of the Grand River in 2016. The trial begins tomorrow morning at the John Sopinka courthouse in Hamilton.
The courtroom was full of people today for the jury selection process. Twelve jurors and two alternates were picked through two phases.
In the first phase, three groups of 20 people were randomly picked. In the second phase, they were asked questions about whether they heard anything about this case before, if they had any bias or pre-conceived opinions about Indigenous men, and also if they had any bias about the fact that the deceased was an Indigenous man and the accused is caucasian.
Styres was shot and killed on Feb. 4th, 2016 outside of Peter Khills home on Highway 56 in Binbrook. Khill pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in court today.
The trial will begin Tuesday at 10 a.m. and is expected to last about two to three weeks.
