A new mental health hub is opening in Hamilton this week. The Youth Wellness Centre will cater specifically to clients who are too old for children’s services, but too young for adult programs.

This is a much needed addition to the city. Right now, young people no longer qualify for children’s services when they turn 18, but they’re not really ready for adult programs, The Youth Wellness Centre will bridge the gap.

Chelsea Rothwell is a youth mentor at the Youth Wellness Centre but if it had existed a few years ago, she could have been a client. “You kind of fall through the cracks, I was one of those kids and so at the Youth Wellness Centre we’re kind of providing a home for all of these, for lack of a better word, misfit adolescents, that wouldn’t receive services otherwise.”

A team of mentors, nurses, psychiatrists and psychologists will treat patients ages 17 to 25. A group that’s currently caught between child and adult services. The centre focuses on early intervention and incorporates art therapy in its treatment. It’s about maximizing accessibility to young people. When it’s up and running, they’ll even be able to apply for treatment online.
