Yarn bombing in Caledonia

There’s a growing trend happening across the country and it popped up on the streets of Caledonia on Wednesday. It’s purpose — to make sure people keep warm this winter.

It was an interesting wake up for Caledonia residents who walked downtown today. What they saw were hats and mits and scarves hanging on trees in the downtown core. At about 7:30 Tuesday night, Jennifer Crevatin and Olga Perin were two of seven women who hung hats, mits and scarves on the trees in the downtown. About 15 women from Caledonia knitted and crocheted the winterwear to give away for free. Now, it’s part of a trend called ‘Yarn Bombing’, where people in the community get together and knit or crochet these creations to express themselves either artistically or just to help one another out.

Olga says that after today when they walked around to see what was happening here, about 50% of the winterwear had been taken off the trees: “It says to me that people appreciate it and that there is a need there and we’re just glad to fill that need. I have grown children now, but when you’re a teenager, they weren’t so good about remembering their hats and they’d get outside and say ‘oh, no’. So this way, they’re on their way to school, they’re out with their babies, people are out and about and it gets 10 degrees colder in the blink of an eye so there’s something there to help you out.”

Jennifer said: “It’s the dead of winter, it seems like winter will never end. And we thought, how we could help warm people up is to make our scarves and headbands and see how people liked it.”

“I think it’s really kind of them to help people out who are less fortunate.”

“I hope people leave it for those who are less fortunate.”

“Good idea, I just noticed it. It came up just now, my daughter said ‘they’re leaving little scarves’. We looked at it and sure enough. It makes me feel warm that people would do that for somebody else.”

Now this happened in Ottawa last month and the girls actually saw it on Facebook and thought ‘what a great idea’. They’re thinking about doing it again next year. And they said that they liked it so much that and it made them feel so good that they’re thinking about hitting up Hamilton.
