This cold weather might be a deterrent for those who want to stay in shape. But you don’t have to skip an outdoor workout tonight because of the cold.

Michelle Gillespie and Pat Peters often run together for 45 minutes during their lunch breaks. They’ve been doing this for years. The -13 with the wind chill might scare others off, but Pat says it brings out the best in her. “In the cold you’re motivated to keep going produce body heat, so it’s actually easier.”

It does seem that working out in the winter months takes a lot more motivation. We live in Canada, not exactly the tropics, but our colder climate is no excuse for staying indoors.

Michelle: “Get out. You live in Ontario take the cold weather with you, run with it!”

Experts say you shouldn’t fear working out in the cold. And of course it’s not like the summer months. City of Hamilton physical activity specialist Alison Bochsler warns there are things you should keep in mind. “Appropriate footwear, you want something that is going to have rubber soles so you can get good traction, and stay on your feet.”

Health officials say the main precaution is to dress appropriately to avoid getting frostbite.
