Whirlpool is slashing 5,000 jobs, many of them here in North America.

The appliance maker is also closing a plant in Arkansas in hopes of saving $400 million by 2013.

The appliance company, which also makes Maytag and Kitchenaid appliances, has faced weak demand and higher costs for steel and copper.

Whirlpool job cuts are also being made in Europe.
