Everyone is bracing for another blast of extreme cold, similar to what we experienced a couple of weeks ago.

Winter in general often puts a strain on our health, mainly because of easily spread cold and flu viruses. But severe cold temperatures can cause problems for anyone living with a chronic condition particularly cardiovascular disease or COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. And even if you’re the picture of health, if you spend any time outside, unprotected, facing frigid wind chills, you are at risk for developing frostbite.

Emergency department physician Dr. Kerry Beal also says once you’ve had frostbite, you are at greater risk of developing it again in the same area.

And Hamilton’s St. Joseph’s Healthcare is continuing it’s recovery from the last cold snap. 5 of the hospital’s 12 operating rooms in the surgical tower are now back up and running. A massive flood from a burst pipe shut down the high tech O.R.’s January 8th. The hospital has been forced to postpone numerous surgeries and even set up operating theatres at it’s King St. East Campus.
