The Ontario Council of Hospital Unions and the Ontario Association of Speech Language Pathologists and audiologists released a report, claiming Ontarians are being pushed out of hospitals while acutely ill. Michael Hurley, president of the OCHU says the elderly especially are not getting the restorative home care they need.
“The auditor general says that between 2005 and 2009 while there was a 5 per cent increase on the amount they spend on homecare there was an 11 per cent increase in the clientele so the actual spending per person dropped.”
The report shows that over the last 20 years the province has cut 19,000 hospital beds and access to in-hospital rehabilitation is severely reduced. The report encourages the provincial government to make alternative policy choices.
