Doctors from Sick Kids and Toronto General hospitals say a three year old Kingston girl is recovering well after receiving a liver transplant.

Michael Wagner could only donate part of his liver to his daughter Phuoc earlier this year, so the family appealed for a second donor for her twin sister Binh. The family announced yesterday that Binh’s transplant had taken place, but the donor wanted to remain anonymous.

Their parents say the donor has changed their lives forever. At a news conference, Michael thanked the donor who “put their life on the line for someone they never met and changed our lives forever. Just as these little girls came into our lives, we promised them we would do everything. And we did it.”

Mother Joanne Wagner: “Thank you so much for your unselfishness, for what you’ve done for Binh… there’s no other word than ‘thank you’, and thank you to the team at Sick Kids who has been such a great support since the beginning.”

Both girls have Alagille Syndrome which affects the liver, heart and other vital organs. It’s also National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, and the Trillium Network has issued an urgent appeal for people to sign donor cards.

Becoming a donor is a very easy process. It only takes two minutes; all you need is your health card and to be at least 16 years old. Find out more at the Be A Donor website.
