HAPPENING NOW:
Toymaker payout
A Canadian toymaker has agreed to pay the U.S. government a fine of $1.3 million.
Toronto based Spin Master sold arts-and-crafts beads that sickened about a dozen children in the U.S.
The toy beads were sold in the U.S. in 2007.
About four million Aqua Dots were recalled in Canada and the U.S. that year after tests showed they were coated with a chemical which can metabolize into the so-called “date rape” drug when ingested.
At the time, Health Canada said it hadn’t received any reports of the toys making any Canadian children ill.
Spin Master is the largest toy manufacturer in Canada, and the fourth largest in North America.
Their first claim to fame, “Air Hogs”, were a big hit in North America.
