The movement is called “no poo” poo being short for shampoo. The method involves cutting shampoo out of the shower routine. Some people replace it with natural products and others go completely au naturel.

Celina Dziuran hasn’t shampooed her hair in 6 months, “the first few weeks were horrible. My hair got really, really greasy the next day but now I feel I can go a week or longer without washing it. And washing it I mean with water.”

Every morning, she douses her tresses in baby powder before styling them and once a week, she washes with water but no shampoo. Dziuran is going ‘no poo’ for low maintenance hair. Others do it to avoid chemicals, or help the environment.

Dermatologist Dr. Jeff donovan, says while there’s no real harm to the method, there’s no real benefit to your hair either. “We don’t have to shampoo our hair everyday and we probably over shampoo our hair in North America but I don’t think there’s really a medical benefit to the no poo movement.”

He says genetics determine how much oil our scalps produce and avoiding certain products won’t really change that. ‘No pooers’ may even develop dandruff from too much oil build up.
