A group of moms and babies tried to set into the Guinness Book of World Records Friday. Their goal was to have the most mothers swaddle their babies at the same time. But the fun also came with an important message about the do’s and dont’s of swaddling a baby. As Cindy Csordas reports, the dont’s can harm or kill your baby.
Swaddling. Precious Moments Babeez says it replicates being snug in a mother’s womb and it’s believed it helps babies sleep better. But there are dangers to the baby if parents swaddle incorrectly.
Sabrina Crimeli is a Director with preciousmomentsbabeez: “As you know (with) SIDS (sudden Infant Death Syndrome), there’s no rhyme or reason why it happens but blankets being caught up around the baby can be one of the risks so making sure your blankets done properly can decrease the risks.”
Some pediatric groups would like to see swaddling banned. because swaddled babies sleep so comfortably and deeply, parents may let their children sleep too long and miss feeding times. swaddling can also cause hip displaysia. something Karla Goar says her daughter Sophie suffered. She believes she may have caused it by improperly swaddling Sophie: “Probably yes. Too tight around the hips, legs, snug, pushing in on the legs and forcing out on the hips.”
Another common mistake parents make when swaddling their baby is they use too small of a blanket, like the one beneath Tayvon here, it’s recommended you use a blanket 42 by 42 inches.
Sabrina: “You have to swaddle up over the shoulder it’s like down, up down up so losely put it up towards the baby but leave it lose like a coat over top and wrapped around the bottom like a little scarf.”
Karen Small is a mother of a 3-month old: “Well, I’ve been doing it with my kids for years and all my kids are grown up now my daughter does it with her children so I think it’s important, I don’t think they should ban it.”
Kathryn Blair is also a mother of a 3-month old: “I don’t think they should ban it parents need to be educated how to do it properly then we don’t have to worry about banning something that is used for a lot of babies who really enjoy being swaddled.”
Sabrina: “10 seconds and swaddle!”
One hundred and three mothers around Ontario swaddled their babies at 11 in the morning. It’s a record that’s been submitted to the Guiness Book of Records.
