Surfset Toronto offers a new kind of workout

A new fitness trend is sweeping into Toronto, called Surfset: an indoor surfing gym that lets you hang ten on dry land.
Not only does it give a taste of surfing – it’s also a great workout. And while fitness is the number one goal at surfset, having fun is a close second.
As co-owner Lua Emilia says, “Everyone’s giggling, everyone’s laughing. It’s never going to be a super intense, angry workout.”
It looks easy, until you take the workout up a notch.
The boards rest on three inflatable cushions. Co-owner Alexandra Vinichenko explains “it mimics the lack of balance on water and surfing.”
Emilia chimes in: “Because you’re on that unstable surface, you’re constantly engaging your core and you’re really building those stabilizer muscles around your joints and your bones.”
So you can get the surfer six pack without dipping a toe in the water. Classes focus on cardio, strength, and flexibility by incorporating yoga and of course, signature surfer moves.
“Every class is 45 minutes in length and you can expect to burn anywhere from 500 to 900 calories in a session.”
Some beach bums even use it to train in the off-season. But at its core Surfset is all about providing a fun, challenging workout that keeps people coming back for more.
“You will start getting a bit of a glow even a couple minutes in. You’re gonna start building up that sweat. Especially if you’re working really really hard.”
Surfset Toronto opens on Monday; a 10 class pass costs $180.
