Supreme Court to re-visit assisted suicide

The Supreme Court of Canada will re-visit the issue of assisted suicide.

The court has agreed to hear an appeal in the case of Kay Carter and Gloria Taylor, who succeeded in briefly overturning the assisted suicide law in 2012. A B.C. judge ruled the law unconstitutional, but delayed her ruling for a year to allow the federal government to re-write the statute. The Provincial Court of Appeal overturned that decision. The high court’s decision comes more than 20 years after its landmark ruling on the issue in the case of Sue Rodriguez, which went against assisted suicide. Both the principals in the present case have died, but the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association is continuing the fight.
