Spring gardening

This weather may have you dreaming of spring blooms, but experts say we still have several weeks to wait. Typically May long weekend is the time to get most of your plants in the ground. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t jobs you can tackle now to make your garden ready for when the ground thaws.
Things are happening under the melting snow and it’s time to prepare for when the grass is a bit greener. Terra’s expert gardener, Debbie Masters, says there are jobs you can do now that will bear fruit later, “if you don’t prune your fruit trees you won’t get the kind of fruit production you’re looking for. It’s that balance between pruning and getting fruit, if you let the plant just grow, you’re going to get all wood, all stems.”
And your salt soaked lawn needs tlc too, “salt in large amounts can damage your lawn so if you put the gypsum down that will offset the salt that’s in the ground and then later when you seed it will work a little easier.”
You can use gypsum pellets or if you have pets try dog spot remover to get rid of urine stains in the grass. Keen to get your hands dirty? Repot some of your indoor plants so they’re ready to move outside when the warm weather comes. When the ground is dry enough to walk on, rake some manure or fresh soil into your beds so they’re ready for whatever you decide to grow.
