Snake bites up so far this year in Ontario

The Ministry of Natural Resources says there have been an unusual amount of rattlesnake bites in cottage country this summer.

So far, six people have been bitten by Ontario’s only venomous snake, the Eastern Massassauga Rattlesnake.

The MNR warns this is mating season for the snakes, and cooler weather in June meant snakes stayed in the uplands instead of moving to cool off in the wetlands where there are fewer people.

The bites are happening in the Georgian Bay and Bruce Peninsula area where the snakes mainly live.
